Season opener for Marvin Fritz at Le Mans - like a world champion

Yamaichi sponsors the champions: YART rider Marvin Fritz travelled to Le Mans for the season opener of the World Endurance Championship (EWC) with the number one on his motorbike. The rider from Baden lived up to his world championship title, setting the fastest time in free practice and qualifying with his team and finishing on the podium in the 24-hour race on the 4.5-kilometre Circuit Bugatti in France.

Marvin Fritz set the fastest time in free practice under difficult tarmac conditions. ‘The track was largely dry, but a few wet patches forced me to concentrate more,’ said Fritz when asked. Marvin Fritz's team once again dominated qualifying with the fastest time and took pole position: ‘The bike was running great, the electronics and chassis were perfectly set up for the conditions and we just had to get through.’

In the lead despite battling for position

The race got off to a picture-perfect start and Marvin Fritz was able to take the lead. After a few battles for position with local hero Sert Motul Suzuki France, Fritz and his team-mates permanently retained the upper hand. Fritz: ‘Even the usually fast FCC Honda France squad couldn't follow us and unfortunately had to retire due to a crash.’

Marvin Fritz was in top form as he reeled off one fast lap after another during the night's difficult race phase and had built up a respectable lead by dawn until team-mate Karel Hanika crashed. After a pit stop, Marvin Fritz took over the YART Yamaha and returned to the race in fourth place, several laps down. Fritz:’ Karel was unhurt, but retired. We had to drive the remaining eight hours of the race in pairs and had just 30 minutes to catch our breath between stints.’

Podium finish at the last minute

But Marvin Fritz put all his eggs in one basket, drove forward from fourth to third place, clinched a podium finish for the team at the last minute and thus gave himself a very personal birthday present. Fritz: ‘We were the fastest throughout the race, didn't have a single technical problem during the race week and pulled out the best possible result in the end. I think the other teams are afraid of us because we are a strong, well-rehearsed team.
